India will soon get its 12th Women's University and Jharkhand its first in Sidhgora, Jamshedpur after Chief Minister Raghubir Das made the announcement on Tuesday. He added that the Union government's approval will be sought at a meeting on December 18 in Delhi.

"We have identified 18 acres of land near Surya Mandir, Sidhgora for the construction of Women University (sic) here," Das told reporters. East Singhbhum district Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar has been directed to send a proposal in this regard within 2-3 days, he added. 

This move comes a century after India's first University Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersay University, popularly known as SNDT in Bombay was established. The other few women's universities are Avinashilingam University, Coimbatore, Mother Teresa Women's University, Kodaikanal,  Banasthali University in Rajasthan and the first private-public women's university in India; Jayoti Vidyapeeth Women's University.

The country surprisingly has approximately 188 women's colleges with West Bengal topping the list with 61, Tamil Nadu with 27 and 17 such colleges in Uttar Pradesh.
