With all the turbulence on campus, Hyderabad Central University which was at the top of the National Institutional Ranking Framework's (NIRF) ranking last year, has slipped to the seventh position and has earned a 14th ranking in the newly-inducted criterion of Common Overall Ranking. Meanwhile, city-based National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research's 5th position, in the pharmacy category, has come as a surprise. In the engineering category, Indian Institute of Technology - Hyderabad managed to get a spot in the top 10 by getting the 10th ranking. The engineering category had a shocker with Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad getting 63rd rank, 29 notches below NIT and only 12 positions ahead of International Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad. University College of Engineering got a lowly 80 ranking.

The NIRF outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country, saw participation from 2,735 institutions this year

Of these 724 were eligible for Common Overall Ranking and 232 were adjudged under the University category

1,007 in Engineering, 535 in another newly-inducted category of Degree College, 542 and 316 in Management and Pharmacy respectively

While all categories listed 100 institutions in each category, pharmacy had 50 in its list
 

Besides UoH and IIT-H, other institutions in Telangana that have made it to the Common Overall Ranking are Osmania University at 38, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research with 58th rank, National Institute of Technology Warangal at 82nd position.

Reflecting on how Osmania has done in the rankings, Vice-chancellor Prof S Ramachandram lauded the institution's strong presence with respect to graduation outcomes which include high placements, qualitative high studies and entrepreneurship, in which it has secured 91.98. "I hope the University would sustain its position in higher education by taking necessary academic and other corrective measures," he said. Dr C Srinivasulu, nodal officer, Statistical Cell of the university said that the ranking procedure helps the University to introspect on their strengths and weaknesses.
