This morning, social media woke up to the images of a few students from Jamia Millia Islamia clearing litter from the streets outside their University. Despite the absolute horror that was unleashed on the campus the previous two days, students from the campus thought it their duty to clean the litter from the streets.
We spoke to one of the students who was part of the group that was cleaning, "For the last few days we've been protesting, forming human chains and witnessing whatever has been happening here. And that day we were also scared, terrified that something might happen if we went out in the dark. But then we saw a few people already doing it, so we impulsively joined them," he explained.
But what is it that motivated them to do so and what do they have to say about the image going viral? "Well, this is the true face of Jamia. We have been holding peaceful protests. And when they treated us so brutally, we protested peacefully against that too," he explained. The student said that those at the protest might still be in fear of police violence or could have been tired to come out and clean, which is why these students decided to do so.
"This is our campus, our university, our roads. So it is our responsibility to keep it clean as well. So even if we are tired we made sure to clean," he added. So will they be back tonight as well, "Yes, tonight and every night that follows," they say.
