Unless you’ve been living under a rock these past few weeks, you would’ve definitely come across the hilarious and ‘oh-so-relatable’ video of a young woman imitating a typical South Indian mother, whose every move is dictated by Tamil/Brown Superstitions. The 26-year-old Chennaiite, Monica Choudhury, who currently lives in Germany, posted the video on her YouTube channel Ma Kinda Life much like she had done before. Little did she know that it would be an instant hit on social media!

“I didn’t expect it to go viral. Someone had requested a video on superstitions and I was actually nervous because I wasn’t sure how people would react. It’s a very sensitive topic to make fun of and I didn’t want to offend anyone’s sentiments. It was crazy how the video got 2 million views in a few days,” says an ecstatic Monica.

An IT engineer by profession, she says that right from her childhood she’s been actively involved in extracurricular activities like plays and debates. “I grew up wanting to be a doctor but my parents felt engineering was a better option. But once I started working, I just knew it wasn’t for me. I wasn’t happy doing something so monotonous, so I quit. By then I got married and had to move to Germany, and my husband was supportive of my career break to figure out what I wanted to do. Deep down, all I wanted to do was make people smile and make a difference in the world,” explains Monica.

Money or fame doesn’t drive me. I just do what I do because one day I hope I can be remembered as the girl who possibly spreads a million smiles

Utilising her break to the fullest, she ticked things off her bucket list one by one. “I started doing things that I’ve always wanted to do like write a book (it isn’t published yet). I also started volunteering with underprivileged kids. I started the channel to encourage people to live their lives the way they want to and with humour,” she says. Being raised by a strict mother, Monica drew inspiration from that for most of her videos. “People tell me that my videos are very relatable and that it has helped them get through tough times. I think that’s what matters,” she says with a smile. She says just like her school days where she spent most of her time onstage entertaining people, she would love to get back onstage.
