The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will review textbooks of private publishers taught in its affiliated schools, a board official said, reported The New Indian Express. The move comes after a controversy over content of textbooks of private publishers sparked a debate on the lack of scrutiny of curriculum taught to children.

CBSE officials will now conduct a periodic review of the textbooks of private publishers prescribed in our affiliated schools

"The decision has been reached after consultations with the NCERT and HRD Ministry," the official added. While an environmental science textbook prescribed by Delhi schools recently attracted ire of animal activists for suggesting students to "kill a kitten" for an experiment, a Class 12 Sociology book taught in Pune cited "ugliness" and physical disability of a girl as reasons behind the dowry issue prevalent in the country.
