The Chennai Collectorate has released a list of 25 unapproved schools as a warning to parents during the admission season. The schools in the list have been operating without obtaining recognition from the state government. These schools are among the 760-odd schools across Tamil Nadu could potentially be shut down by the government.

Most of the schools are functioning in the Thiruvallur district in the state. While some of the schools are claiming to be affiliated to the CBSE, others say they were functioning as private primary and nursery schools and had thus sought approval from the Department of Elementary education. In order to attain approval from the State government, the school must obtain the following — 'No Objection' certificate from the Health Department, building stability certificate from local bodies, fire safety certificate and it should also needs to meet the minimum land requirements prescribed by the government.

According to the Right of Children for Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, the schools are also mandated to apply for a renewal of their recognition certificate every three years. The Collector, A Shanmuga Sundaram said that the schools were shut down now because they didn't want students to suffer in the middle of the academic year. Recently a CBSE school was not allowed to hold their annual exams at the very last minute because they did not have the required recognition.

A senior member of the department has said that the schools have been instructed to update their recognition status. District committees have also been set up to supervise and conduct inspections in the schools. Other Districts are also expected to release their lists of derecognized and unrecognised schools in the near future.
