TISS cuts library hours: Four times Indian campuses restricted library hours for its students

We take a look at a few prominent protests that took place in campuses across the country over the past year on the library hours issue

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai recently made it to news for cutting down its library hours. According to a new circular, the library will be open from 9 am to 2 am during the exam time and from 9 am to 11 pm. Previously, the library was open from 9 am to 6 am throughout the year.

These happenings have left the students in distress. Many of them have voiced their disappointment through social media. The students have also sent a joint statement to the administration, voicing their disapproval towards the move.

Hidayatullah National Law University, September 2018

On August 27, the students staged a protest against restrictive hostel and library timings and alleged sexual harassment by teachers. After 1 week of protests, the management gave in to their demand for extended library timings

Panjab University, Oct 2018

The students of Panjab university staged a month-long protest demanding that the management relax female hostel and library timings. The management accepted their 12 demands on October 13, 2018, but not before SAP goons thrashed the protesters. 

Punjab University, April 2019 

The RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) put its foot down on the authorities’ decision to close off the reading room on the first floor of AC Joshi Library at 9 pm sharp. To control the situation from spiralling out of control, DSW (M) Emanuel Nahar, accompanied by Prashant Kumar Gautam, director, University Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management and PU chief security officer Ashwani Kaul, arrived at the spot and reopened the library at about 9.45pm.

ABVP, NSUI created ruckus over timings of the central library. They demanded that the library remained open throughout the day after the management decided to reduce timings to 12 hours.
