The Puducherry Secretariat has issued a show-cause notice on directions of the Health Secretary V Candavelou to Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital (SMVMCH), a self-financing institution under the Pondicherry University, following complaints of charging an excessive fee for admission of students for MBBS course in the college.

Deputy Secretary M Sarathy, who issued the notice, stated that candidates who have been issued provisional allotment order for admission in MBBS course in the college under management quota through MOP-UP counselling by Centac, are being charged a huge amount in addition to the tuition fee already fixed by the fee committee for the academic year 2018-2019.

The students have also complained that the institute threatened them of losing their allotment seat unless the fee demanded by the institute is paid up. Referring to the order of the Secretariat on July 3, 2018 with regard to the fee, Sarathy said that the fee fixed by the committee is also inclusive and the educational institutions are not entitled to collect any kind of fee over and above the amount fixed by the committee.

Any deviation will entail serious penalty including withdrawal of approval accorded by the MCI and the Dental Council of India and cancellation of the Essentiality Certificate issued by the Government of Puducherry and disaffiliation by Pondicherry University as well as the imposition of a hefty fine as penalty. He directed the college to admit the students since they are deemed to have been admitted and further directed the institution not to demand any other fee other than what was fixed by the committee.

The college has been directed to furnish a compliance report by August 24, failing which severe action would be taken against the institute for demanding excess and illegal fees, he said.
