Ctrl C and Ctrl V (copy and paste) are the two best computer functions invented by mankind, according to this writer at least. But Ctrl F, to find a word in a page or document, comes a close third. After all, the simplest functions are the ones that share the load, right? But if Subtl.ai — a start-up seeded at International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H) since its inception — achieves what it aims to, Ctrl F will be long forgotten.
What Subtl.ai essentially does is it combines various technologies like deep tech, document comprehension models, cognitive modelling, relevance engine, natural language processing solution, question and answer systems and more to help you find what you intend to find in a document. All this is possible with Subtl Bot. Vishnu Ramesh, CEO and Co-founder, Subtl.ai, explains that when he and Manish Shrivastava — an Assistant Professor at IIIT Hyderabad with over 15 years of experience in this domain — joined forces, they started building the technology in mid-2018 and in January 2020, they launched the start-up.
Still wondering what exactly Subtl.ai does? Allow us to explain. Suppose there is a lengthy employee agreement document and you are a consultant at an IT firm. You want to find out where in the document the salary is mentioned. Now, you might try Ctrl F, speed reading or combing through the document word by word, but what if the document says package instead of salary? That's where Subtl Bot steps in. "So all you have to do is ask your question, our tech seamlessly works with the document and launches a cognitive search," says the 23-year-old. Once Subtl Bot creates expert bots and inserts it in your document, all you need to do is ask and you shall receive. Now, you can properly leverage all the data available to you.
The alumnus of BITS, Hyderabad who pursued his Bachelor's in Computer Engineering, believes that Subtl.ai could be useful anywhere, but currently, they are focusing on BSFI (Banking, Financial Services and Insurance) and manufacturing industries. Base evaluation on how it will work in the legal space is also being carried out. Another thing they are trying out is something we are most excited about. "We are going to deploy curriculum textbooks on our portal, share free login credentials with a few students and carry out a demo. We are excited to see how they will interact with our tech and this is how we will test our product for their market," says Vishnu. They are validating this with two EdTech start-ups to test the waters.
