Word to Word Consulting, a content studio based in Bengaluru that specialises in providing quality content for the print and online media, also conducts children-centric workshops through their Words and Visuals initiative. One such workshop, the second edition of Words and Visuals will take place in Cunningham Road, Bengaluru during two weekends in June.

The workshops meant for children within the age group of 10- 12 years are divided into two parts — creative writing and book reading. Children who would like to sharpen their writing skills can be a part of the creative writing session from June 22-23 (10 am to 1 pm) and June 29-30 (10 am to 1 pm) and experience the joy of reading on June 22-23 (2.30 pm to 5.30 pm). It will cost you Rs 2000 per session.

The activities will be conducted by former journalists and feature writers who are experts in their own field. The Word to Word Consulting company was founded by a team of three former business journalists — Anjali Prayag, Anjana Chandramouly and Swetha Kannan and was set up in August 2015. They themselves also conduct the workshops. All three of them are currently freelance writers and editors, writing and editing for various publications, both online and offline. They also offer language training for students and working professionals.

Children learn to appreciate, become movie critics themselves and also engage with the movie. They are encouraged to understand the characters and asked how they would do things differently if they were directors through fun exercises in order to stimulate their thinking

The first edition of this workshop was conducted in May in both Bengaluru and Chennai, which was a summer programme for five days for children between 10 to 13 years of age. Although the second edition only has creative writing and book reading, their workshops also include a session called 'Reel Talk' that is meant for movie appreciation.

What the programme is about: Children are curious by nature with boundless imagination and creativity. But often, the rigour of academics fails to nurture this. But thankfully, the holidays are here, and this is a good time to spur one’s imagination, creative expression and critical thinking. Words and Visuals is an exploratory programme that encourages children to think freely and express creatively and helps develop useful analytical skills through fun activities.

Write Well: This is the creative writing component of the programme that will focus on sharpening creative thinking and expression through the powerful medium of words — using word association games, lateral thinking exercises and audio-visual aids.

Book Club: This will help children discover the joy of reading and nurture a love for it, one page at a time. Interactive read-aloud sessions, critical thinking exercises, book reviews and role-plays promise to make reading a stimulating and enjoyable activity. They grasp the stories better.

The whole experience will stay with them for a long time, says Anjana. "We have done only two editions and we want to take this forward and do a lot more for children. One thing what we have learned in Bengaluru is due to the traffic situation a lot of people inquire but can't come because it's too far for them. We want to conduct such sessions in more areas. We are looking for space and marketing partners to do more," she adds.
