Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (PTI): Schools and universities across Uttar Pradesh will get a chance to understand the electoral process through several events, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said on Monday.

"Uttar Pradesh's universities and schools will have programmes to understand the transparency of the electoral process and the entire process," Kumar, who is in Lucknow for two days, told reporters.

"I have an old association with Lucknow. I had gone from here for higher education. After a long time, I have come to my karmabhoomi, Lucknow, to convey a message to the voters of Uttar Pradesh. Especially, I have to say a few things to our Booth Level Officers, who are the foundation of democracy," he said.

Uttar Pradesh will go to the polls in early 2027.

Kumar was received at Lucknow airport by Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa.

He is scheduled to interact with students at Colvin Taluqdars' College, where he received his early education, and attend a regional conference on Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELC) 2.0 and ECINET at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan.

On Tuesday, Kumar will interact with around 500 BLOs from Lucknow and neighbouring districts.

The ELC programme, launched in 2018 under the SVEEP initiative, is being redefined as ELC 2.0 to make electoral literacy activities in schools, colleges and universities active throughout the year, experiential and digitally enabled.

Regional conferences on ELC 2.0 and ECINET will subsequently be held in Meerut and Varanasi.
