After a series of strikes, protests and incidents of violence, the Jawaharlal Nehru University is set to celebrate the country's 70th Republic Day. The university's Vice-Chancellor Dr Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar had issued a statement saying that JNU's NCC cadets will be participating in a parade at the flag-hoisting venue.

The statement says that this is happening for the first time since JNU was established in 1969. "JNU is gearing up to celebrate Republic Day. This year, for the first time, the NCC cadets of the University will be participating in a parade at the venue of the flag hoisting during the Republic Day celebrations at JNU," it reads.

The Vice-Chancellor also says that 82 per cent of the students have cleared their hostel fee dues for the winter semester. This is despite the students' #FeesMustFall protest against the newly increased hostel fees. "Out of 8500 students at JNU, 82 percentage of students have cleared their hostel dues for the winter registration as of Monday. The remaining students are also expected to complete their registration process since the registration is still open but with a late fee," reads the statement.

The JNU Students' Union is yet to respond to Mamidala's statement. This copy will be updated when the body responds.
