How do you survive a pandemic as a family? For Sharjah-based couple Arjun Doney Varghese and Tara Susan George, it has been about going from one light moment to the next. In fact, some of these light moments can be found on Arjun’s Instagram page where the couple has dazzled their fast-growing followers through 1-minute sketches — featuring themselves and their 3 and 1-year-old daughters — that recreate hilarious situations that all families can relate to.

It all started when Arjun, a business-owner, finally got himself certified as a personal trainer earlier this year. The idea was to make small fitness education videos for YouTube but when Corona and the subsequent lockdown hit, the family found themselves stuck with each other and a whole lot of free time. This is when he decided to use his newly minted video editing skills to create a Harlem Shake video of their own.

FAMILY MATTERS: Their videos explore everyday themes

Their videos explore themes like how the family deals with intruders and going for walks as a family. Each video features all four family members bringing their own hilarious spin to it. Occasionally, Arjun’s parents, who live just a floor below them, also join in to add to the fun. They say, “We make the videos using Filmora9 (a video editing software). The ideas are all basically just slightly exaggerated versions of what happens or could happen in our life which is why most people, particulary couples and young families, can relate to our videos.”

Arjun explains, “Usually when an idea or topic comes to mind, I write a quick basic script and then, Tara reads it and gives her suggestions like what to remove, add or modify. And when we’re filming, we improvise a lot, especially our daughters! Our first official video after the Harlem Shake was ‘NOT ALONE’, a horror-comedy video that we suddenly decided to make one evening just after putting our kids to sleep in the living room.

Although they were supposed to stop making the videos once classes and work resumed, the couple has given into their growing fan following and decided to keep making them. Uploaded on YouTube and Instagram, the reactions from their friends and family have been quite loud and supportive. And for now, this small comedy troupe plans on keeping netizens laughing.
