One will laugh claiming it as joke when told that cellphone can be charged by sitting on chair. But it can happen and also keeps a person sitting on chair healthy. A team of young engineering students from Belagavi has invented a special 'Power chair' where one can charge his cellphone relaxing on chair. This innovative project on energy developed by 2nd year mechanical engineering students of Gogte institute of technology(GIT) is grabbing the attention of people.

The team consist of students Abduljabbar Khan, Ajay Lengade, Ankur Chitnis, Ajit Navi and Aayan Munshi have developed this power chair understanding the present day power problems. A person goes in tension when his phone battery goes dead. Thus using sewing peddler mechanism, this special chair has been developed for the future world that one can even charge his phone sitting on chair waiting for someone. The rotary motion is generated when a person peddle a peddler that installed below the chair and then this motion is converted into energy with the help of alternator, fly wheels, Neodymium magnets and invertor. A car battery is used to store 300 watt hour energy generated by peddling the peddler on chair. Speaking to TNIE, Abduljabbar Khan said 'The idea of power chair came into my mind when i was waiting for my number at Saloon for hair cutting. I thought that i can generate power sitting anywhere so that at least i can charge my cellphone. Using the peddling mechanism made our project more special as the person sitting whole day on chair can also do exercise by sewing peddling. It will also help to keep the people healthy and fit.

Another member of team Ajay Lengade said 'Although the electricity has reached to every village in country, many villages faces interruption in power supply till day. Since every business is depend on smart phone now days, electricity has become must for people. Thus our power chair can turn best solution as one can charge their phone sitting and peddling on the chair. The people working in the government offices and IT companies have to sit on chairs for hours. It create many health issues among those employees. Thus if they uses this power chair they can enjoy exercising while doing other office work simultaneously he said. Mechanical engineering professor Dr Shrinivas Gombi from GIT who guided students in this project said that this project of students is unique and can bring major change in the society. It has gone through rigorous rounds of selection process and was listed in top 30 and grand finale at KPIT Sparkle-project exhibition held at Pimpri-Chinchawad college of engineering, Pune recently. More than 22,150 registrations from more than 1121 engineering and science colleges were received for this exhibition. based on the novelty, affordability and commercial viability evaluaters shortlisted 30 teams out of 1915 teams for the finals and our project one amongst he said.

The team invented this chair in the cost of Rs 25,000 contributed by college and working for months. To make it realize to people, they have also shown demonstration of power chair at Belagavi railway station and Central bus stand and got positive feedbacks from people. If we get funding further, we have plans to bring some modification and introduce this chair in market says the team.Caption: Team giving demonstration of power chair at Exhibition in Pune.
