If you are looking for a career in teaching then this book will tell you everything you need to know. Being a 21st Century Educator written by Sudha Mahesh is the first of its kind that serves to equip teachers on the do’s and don’ts of teaching in an Indian classroom scenario. She goes on to say that, “Teaching comprises of two instances and a balance of both is equally important. The first instance focusses on how to be an effective teacher in interacting with children, conducting soft skills sessions and classroom control.T he second instance is mostly content communication narrowed down to the respective subject."

Sudha Mahesh was a dedicated housewife for a span of 15 years. She later began her career by teaching kids in the first grade. It was during this phase she realised that she wanted to write a book. She jotted down her experiences and learnings into this book, with a vision to form a teacher’s community that shares the same goal which is, to promote the betterment of every child that comes to school. The content of this book is not subject to just her experiences but also shines a light on the generic instances faced by teachers on a regular basis and how to go about dealing with those difficult instances. This book also brings back teaching history alive where and it further aims to reinvent past teaching methods to suit the needs of children of the 21st-century.

How long did it take to write the book?

It took me one whole year to write this book. The initial thought of writing occurred to me when I began my teaching career a few years back. I have been through struggles and fought through them and I believed that it was high time I contributed towards the teaching community by sharing my experiences and learnings and helping them and guiding them towards being an effective teacher. This field of work requires a lot of patience and commitment and those working in it need encouragement even more so. Thus leading me to publish the book in January 2018.

Could you please elaborate on the content of the book?

This book encourages teachers to be open to learning new things and improve on their potentials. It also gives a detailed description of the effecting teaching methodologies that can be adopted in a classroom. I have also added content on how the institution can contribute by framing and evaluating the curriculum. The role of parents in understanding the importance of investing their time and effort on their children is one portion that the book covers as well. Parents also play a vital role in being educators to their children.

What according to you is the immediate need of the hour in terms of teaching and the approach to teaching?

We need teachers who are passionate about working with children. It is not easy to work with children and that is why we need teachers who can be patient and flexible in adapting to new teaching methodologies. It is important to understand that every child is unique and their specific needs are unique and only a committed teacher can take up the responsibility of addressing those needs. Teaching is not an alternate career that any individual can take up part-time. Being a Teacher is as important as being a Doctor, both professions contribute towards lives of people and it has to be taken seriously. This fact was my prime motivator towards writing this book.
