Back in 2009, Sunil Patro, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus was on a vacation in Mexico, when he received an email for an exciting job offer in Silicon Valley. He wanted to return the signed offer letter as soon as possible but realised his only option was to scramble around for the nearest print shop in the foreign country, to print, scan and then send it back. This cumbersome paperwork process, combined with the high printing and mailing costs ($20 to be exact) left him thinking that there should be an easier way to sign documents from the device that everyone has, a smartphone. That's how SignEasy was born — a simple document signing app that would enable people to sign important documents on the go from their phones, tablets or computer.

A SignEasy user can simply upload a document of their choice — the app supports all file types such as PDF, Word, Excel, JPEGs — drag-and-drop their signature, name, date, and other details directly onto the document. You can also upload a document to send out for signature, and place the text fields (called smart fields) directly where the signer needs to complete the information. The smart fields help to guide the signers to fill and sign at the right places. SignEasy integrates with popular applications like G-Suite, Office 365, Microsoft Teams and Dropbox thus providing the users with a simple solution to import, sign, and send their documents.

Documents signed with SignEasy are ESIGN compliant in the US, eIDAS compliant in EU compliant and Aadhaar compliant in India as legally binding as handwritten signatures. Users can also set up a passcode or biometric authentication to ensure that their signature and documents are safe and accessible only to the account holder

Sunil Patro, Founder and CEO of SignEasy

SignEasy was founded in 2010 by Sunil, a technologist, product-centric thinker and entrepreneur. Sunil has a decade of product and engineering experience at Microsoft, Juniper Networks, TokBox and Cleartrip in building enterprise collaboration software to carrier grade routing systems to consumer-focused video conferencing apps. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from IIT Kharagpur and Master’s degree from Purdue University, USA.

SignEasy is a cloud-based, secure solution that works across all platforms — iOS, Android, and web browsers. It even works offline without an internet connection. It also has an API platform that third-party software providers can use for integrating eSignatures into their document-based workflows. The application has a freemium, premium free, model where the first 3 signatures are free of cost. Then the user can upgrade to one of three paid plans that includes Pay As You Go, Pro and Business subscription for unlimited document signing and other business-friendly features.

"With over 5.5 million downloads till date, SignEasy is used every day by professionals, small businesses and enterprises like Equinix, Intertrust, Berkshire Partners, Cleartrip, Aruba Bank, Stribling, and Rappi. The app is consistently featured among the best business apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store and was voted the best in customer satisfaction for eSignature solutions among small to medium businesses," adds Sunil.

He says the response has been overwhelming since the application's inception, "Over 30,000 companies from 180 countries trust SignEasy to reduce paperwork turnaround times, close deals faster, cut costs and improve the customer experience by eliminating the cumbersome print-sign-scan-fax process. Over 15 million documents have been signed with SignEasy so far. I think, overall, customers choose SignEasy because of our simplicity and ease of use, awesome customer service, and value for money."

As far as their future plans go, Sunil says there's a lot they have to work on to integrate certain important features into the app. Some of the major plans they have are to integrate the collection of payment after signing a contract, quote or invoice and expand on Aadhaar eSign use mainly for Indian enterprises.
