Competitive exams offer a wide range of career options for the youth, especially graduates. Though it is public knowledge as being one of the main sources of getting into coveted government positions, it is also a fact that not many youngsters prefer to take a walk down this road and test their ability to crack the competitive exams.

One of the possible reasons could be the myths related to competitive exams, that they are very difficult to pass, that might have an adverse impact on the minds of youngsters. Moreover, they might be concerned that they will have to spend a lot of time preparing for the same. Sometimes, even their disbelief will work against them and keep them away from competitive exams.

On the other side, we can also witness that many among the youth work their way meticulously to crack the competitive exams and get into top positions in the government structure. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) which paves the way for Civil Service, the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) for Central Government jobs, the State Service Commissions for various administrative and designated career opportunities are all classic examples of the fruits of passing a competitive exam which is at everyone’s reach, provided the concerned individual is geared up for the same.

Now, with the proposal of a National Recruitment Agency (NRA) by the Government of India doing the rounds, it is expected that there will be more and more career openings that will be made available for the youth through competitive exams. Given the volatile nature of private and corporate jobs, which keeps fluctuating with the economic and social parameters, the youth must take a look at the competitive exams and make a great career.

As a Human Resource mentor working closely with the youth with regard to career guidance, I would like to offer some points which will give you a better understanding of how you should approach the competitive exams.

Some points to keep in mind:

- Self-learning: You can prepare for these exams through self-learning or group study

- Know it all: Start by knowing exactly what career it is that you are aspiring for

- Don’t burn-out: Make sure you don’t get fatigued by fixing a proper routine

The main components are: General Knowledge, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning Ability and English
