The proverbial ‘slip between the cup and lip’ syndrome can be experienced by youngsters when they miss out on choosing a proper career path at the right time and later harbour regret and resentment for the same. It is common nowadays to witness several undergoing a midlife crisis caused as a result of improper work-life balance. It is pertinent to state that the importance of choosing a career path and the necessity to create a career can never be expressed more significantly than with the above mentioned statements.

In my human resource mentoring experience, I have come across a number of youngsters who have approached me for guidance to create an illustrious career. All that I would tell them at first is to look within themselves and decide how they would like to see themselves in the future, more specifically ten years down the line. Yes! It is all a matter of the mind and it is precisely this factor that will make all the difference when it comes to the aspect of creating a successful career. Let us understand that a career, for all practical purposes, is a journey that you have to take for a significant period in your life.

Therefore, it is your responsibility to make the best choice to suit your dreams, which I would call ambition at this stage. Youngsters should start out early. You should keep focusing on the area that you would like to get involved with as a profession much before your final exams. Nowadays, we suggest that the process should actually start from the school days itself. It does not matter if you have not done it then; the second best time is now.

Reflect on the choices that are coming to your mind and search for life examples to see how they are progressing and what professional status they achieve, inclusive of rank and rewards, their contribution to the social life and so on.

Your thoughts should be directed towards the choices that are still in your mind and you should try to imagine yourself in that exact position, so that it reaches your subconscious.

Some points to remember
- Mind your choice: The choice that best suits your mind makes a difference to your personality
- What is career?: Career is your past and future plans blended together with hard work
- Do what you like: Career is not about money, but about doing what you like the most

Learn to be patient and never give up on time and effort when you are chasing your ambitions
