The trainer brainer: Youth should know their self-worth, avoid comparison with others

Avoid comparison with others. Focus on what it is that you have within yourself and work with that

Successful career development is strongly based on the foundation of personal self-esteem. It is certainly difficult for an individual who has poor or low self-esteem to become successful professionally. Every activity in a professional environment has to be done with a note of confidence for it to be successful. This is also known as ‘self-confidence’ which is an essential aspect of ‘self-esteem’.

Self-esteem for personal and professional development for the youth, especially fresh graduates, is very significant since they actually create an identity for themselves based on their self-worth. This is critical in the current globalised corporate culture for professional success. Unless the youth realises their self-worth and appreciate the good qualities that they possess, they will not be able to aspire for a better career. The personality trait of the individual is among the important qualities that the recruiters look for apart from the individual’s academic performance.

Having stated the importance of self-esteem, it is necessary to turn our attention to the aspect of low self-esteem and its impact on the youth’s career development. The youth will have to understand that low self-esteem creates a sense of uneasiness, which will add to their stress and desperation and can even lead to depression. This is mainly because the individual does not reflect their true self-worth and they assume a negative outlook. It is a demotivating factor, which will not let them take initiative based on their intuition. This is enforced upon them due to the lack of appreciation of their own self.

This tendency is widely prevalent among the youth when you meet them in a group for any motivational or personality development programme and even career development sessions. I often wonder why the youth are not sensitised about this very basic personality framework and work towards overcoming it?
Great career options are for everyone. The only aspect that you should focus on is ‘what you have within you’.
