'Our crime is that we are residents of dormitories': An open letter to the SPIC MACAY participants from JNU students

There have been multiple allegations by the students against the JNU administration for asking the dormitory residents to move out forcefully

Greetings to the Artists,

We the students of JNU are highly obliged that on its Golden Jubilee, the grand program of SPIC MACAY is being organized wherein we shall be witnessing the performances of various great artists. We are delighted to become a host to such an event.

However, we would like to bring to your notice that for the celebration of this program, the students living in the dormitories are being thrown out of their rooms, they have been asked to vacate their rooms in order to accommodate the SPIC MACAY participants.

We, students, have been forcefully asked to vacate our rooms at the earliest,  in certain dormitories our luggage and beddings have been thrown out. The students who have gone to their hometowns are being called, they are being asked to come back to the University in order to vacate the rooms. Failure in attending their calls is resulting in the authorities calling our parents and asking them to come to the University. The tone of the authority is very rude as they only wish to threaten us. Incessant calls are being made to everyone and their parents, which is not only making the students uncomfortable but this procedure is also against the rules and regulations. Violating the right to shelter of the students, they are threatening us to vacate our rooms. Mishandling of our possessions has taken this far from the rightful conduct.

The pleasure of seeing you all perform is turning out to be a misery for many of us. Our crime is that we are residents of dormitories. It's unfortunate that the administration never asked us or our representatives from hostel and University about such an arrangement. It's not as if we don't want to host our guests but the question is how do we? Is this the way?  Where students who are residents are being thrown out? It's appalling because we students are having to bear the brunt when JNU administration could have made alternative arrangements. The Vice-Chancellor, Rector, Proctor, Dean of Students, Hostel Wardens and other administrative officials should have led by example by evacuating their residence for 10 days to accommodate the guests.

We ask the performers if they are comfortable performing in a university that is devoiding it's students of their shelter?
The students are engaged in preparing for their JNUEE, NET/JRF and are being harassed by the authorities to vacate their rooms at the earliest.

It is from this pain and suffering that we are writing to you. Maybe our voices haven't reached you. But when you all perform in JNU, please do remember that students have been brought on roads and their belongings to dust in order to ensure you all perform.

We wish that you understand our stance and understand that the celebration without the peace and participation of the students is not an event worth celebrating.
We, students, stand firm on our grounds and will not put up with any harassment from the authorities.

It's a request to the participants and performers to think and reflect. We hope you pay heed to this.

A dormitory resident
