One needs to be ready for a career mentally and personally in terms of equipping themselves with the required attitude and skills. A career is no more an automatic destination for an individual. The process of transition from college life to that of a professional, calls for something more than mere marks and grades.
Being ready for a career is very significant for graduates and the youth in general in an era where global standards coupled with rapid changes in the industrial and economic environment is being witnessed every day.

It is essential that the youth appraise their ‘career readiness’. The youth must be aware of it so that they can take suitable steps in the required direction. Career readiness is a commitment to lifelong learning so that they can develop greater adaptability to withstand future challenges. It can be broadly classified into two forms:

a. Personal Skills: This is essential as it empowers the graduates to have an edge over the other candidates and project them as potential candidates.

b. Technical Skills: The academic inputs must be leveraged by the individuals to help them build their technical skills which would in turn help showcase their talents to potential employers.

The candidate must have working knowledge and hands-on skills in computer applications and other areas of expertise. Technical skills pertaining to the core area of study and the efficient application of the same in a professional environment is highly recommended.

Career readiness will enable an individual to navigate their pathway progressively towards success. Its quality is directly proportional to the quality of openings and opportunities that they will be able to attract from possible employers.

As a human resource mentor, I would encourage the youth to be enthusiastic about their careers and get ready for it by visualising their dream careers and equipping themselves with the required skills well in advance, rather than adopting the ‘wait until you cross the bridge’ attitude. Your career and future are in your hands!
