Career indecision is something that every youth will have to be aware of and they must be prepared to work their way to succeed by not falling into the trap
Career as an aspect has to be constructed by an individual brick by brick, which has to have a strong foundation of ‘decisions’. The youth particularly the fresh graduates needs to understand that decisions will have to be taken at any cost and there is no escape route.
Many a time we find the youth prone to indecisiveness, which poses a great problem for them in many areas of their life. This is very significant if it happens in the area of their career development since it impacts their future on the whole. Career indecision is something that every youth will have to be aware of and they must be prepared to work their way to succeed by not falling into the trap.
As a human resource mentor, whenever I get to meet the graduates in any program of career development, many would come up to me to seeking help to overcome indecision. It is common to find that many are undecided regarding their future, but what is most worrying is that they suffer from perplexity and undergo a certain amount of stress which reflects in their personality and reduces their self-esteem. This certainly avoidable if they have proper orientation to the aspect of career indecision and develop their attitude to overcome it with confidence.
Career indecision is not something that is insurmountable; it is very much possible to come out of its web if the intent is there within the individual. The following points can be of help in this connection:
Career indecision usually occurs at the initial phase of career path for an individual, yet it can also be according to varied situations like career change; re-employment after migration and other life situations.
It can also happen due to technological change and changes to the business environment.
Indecision is a phenomenon at work on an individual level which is associated with personality and intelligence. One needs to develop a high quotient of emotional intelligence to make better decisions in life.
A self-appraisal of informational background check by the individual to a very great extent can help in developing the habit of decision making. A sort of mental mock interview or role play would indicate the level of preparedness of the individual to the requirements of the global, business, corporate and government sectors of careers.
The uncertainties in a career development scenario need to be approached with a high degree of self-esteem, which naturally empowers the individual with enthusiasm. Low self-esteem leads to lack of confidence in making choices, which also brings in anxiety.
The initiative to get oriented to informed choices will give a great boost to overcome indecision. Taking initiative always motivates the individual and brings out the best in terms of confidence to speak out their mind.
In a career selection scenario, the individual who is conditioned to align their career goals with that of their personality traits will be much more rewarded appropriately with success. Career goals are a very effective approach to make decisions since it gives a way forward to move on.
A positive frame of mind to face up to challenges without bothering about the fear of failing will be an advantage for an individual to make decisions.
Finally, writing out a statement of purpose would enable the youth to come to a certain level of clarity in their minds about what they aspire for and what is that they have within themselves to achieve it in terms of career development.
Career indecision is emerging as one of the major causes of worry among the majority of the youth, who find it difficult to succeed. They must be trained and groomed to be decisive, which is the easiest and the only way out for emerging successful.
