KEO AI PC Explained: What Karnataka’s new computers mean for government-school students

Karnataka is trying to address the technology gap with KEO, a compact AI-ready computer that the state plans to introduce in government schools across the state. So, what is KEO and how could it help students?

What is KEO?

KEO stands for Knowledge-driven, Economical and Open-source (KEO). It is a compact computing platform built using an open-source RISC-V processor architecture, open-source hardware and software, along with an AI accelerator.

One of its key features is that AI applications can run directly on the device, rather than depending completely on cloud-based systems. This could be useful for schools in areas where internet connectivity is not always reliable.

How students can use?

The idea is to allow government-school students to work with technologies that are increasingly becoming important in higher education and the job market. Students could use KEO computers to learn coding, artificial intelligence, machine learning and electronics. Teachers can also use AI-based interactive tools as part of classroom learning.

"We don't just launch a device. We launch a dream - the dream that every child in Karnataka, from rural villages to city centres, can learn, build and shape the future of artificial intelligence," PTI quoted CM Shivakumar.

How many KEO AI PCs in government schools?

The government has decided to deploy 1,000 KEO AI PCs in government schools, with the stated aim of eventually taking the technology to all government schools in Karnataka. Under the first phase supported by the Shikshana Foundation, 2,222 KEO computers are planned to be deployed across the state.

The rollout will cover all 31 districts and 239 talukas. The government is also looking at partnerships with industry and CSR organisations to expand the programme.

What it means for students?

For students, the significance of KEO goes beyond simply having another computer in the classroom. If the rollout is implemented effectively, it could give more government-school students the chance to experiment with AI, build basic technology skills and understand how emerging technologies work.

However, the government's bigger test is how these computers are integrated into everyday teaching and whether students and teachers receive the support needed to use them effectively. Time reveals all outcomes.
