New Delhi: The Delhi government has approved research fellowships in archives and archaeology to facilitate scientific study, documentation and digitisation of the capital's historical heritage, which spans thousands of years and includes manuscripts, archival records, archaeological sites and monuments representing multiple civilisations.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said Delhi is not only the national capital but also a living heritage of history, culture and civilisation.
She said preserving this legacy through scientific research, systematic documentation and wider accessibility for future generations is among the government's priorities.
The Delhi Cabinet has approved the Research Fellowship in Archives and the Research Fellowship in Archaeology with the aim of promoting specialised studies and creating a strong pool of experts in history, archaeology and heritage conservation, a statement said.
The Research Fellowship in Archives will focus on high-quality archival research, strengthening archival management, preservation and conservation of historical records, digitisation of documents and making important records accessible to the public, it said.
The fellowship will provide a platform for researchers, archivists, conservation specialists, historians, linguists and heritage experts to undertake studies on different aspects of Delhi's history and archival science.
According to the statement, areas covered under the scheme include records management, conservation of archival material, digitisation, dissemination of information, data management, microfilming, reprography, research publications and studies related to Oriental languages, particularly Urdu and Persian.
Under the archives fellowship, 15 fellows will be selected every year for a one-year term. They will receive a monthly fellowship ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000, it added.
The Research Fellowship in Archaeology aims to encourage research, conservation and enhancement of Delhi's archaeological sites and monuments, with special focus on lesser-known historical structures, it said.
The scheme will promote studies related to Delhi's history, archaeology, architecture and conservation, while also contributing to heritage preservation and tourism.
As per the statement, a total of 12 fellows will be selected every year for a one-year term under the archaeology fellowship and will receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000.
Gupta said the two fellowship schemes will help develop skilled professionals in archives, archaeology and heritage conservation, provide fresh direction to academic research and contribute to preserving Delhi's documentary and archaeological heritage.
She said detailed guidelines regarding eligibility criteria, application process, selection procedure and other terms and conditions for both schemes will be notified separately by the concerned departments.
The fellowships are expected to be launched soon after the operational guidelines are issued, it added.
