After students of Rajah Muthiah Medical College, Chidambaram, Cuddalore, carried on their protest against exorbitant fees for 50 days, the Tamil  Nadu government has announced that the College will now function under the Department of Higher Education. The College was previously under the Department of Higher Education. The college which was affiliated to Annamalai University, was taken over by the government in 2013.

After talks between the students and the Annamalai administration failed, the decision to shift the college was taken. Rani Meyyammai Nursing College and Raja Muthiah Dental College will also begin functioning under the Health Department. The government issued the order after students refused to call off the protest despite the hostel, mess, and campus being completely shut down.

Annamalai University administration had issued several ultimatums and had threatened FIRs too, however, the students were relentless. On Thursday, medical students from college campuses across the state came out in solidarity and demanded that the government intervene in the matter.

However, students are still apprehensive about whether this would impact the current fee structure in place.
