Since most of their names were not on the merit list, confusion arose and the JIPMER management cancelled the counselling. This irked the students and parents came from various states and nearly fifty of them gathered near the entrance of JIPMER and protested by sitting on the road. They complained that many students in the merit list already got admission in various medical colleges including AIMS, so they had travelled long distances for admission, but were upset due to the cancellation of the counselling.

Policemen from D Nagar police station rushed to the spot and tried to pacify them. Meanwhile, people from the JIPMER management had a talk with them and informed them that they can register in the JIPMER website till January 12, and a fresh merit list would be released the next day. Based on that, counselling would be conducted on January 15. After that, parents and students withdrew the protest.
