RIP SPB: Here are 10 songs by Padum Nila, which will remain with us forever

With his passing away, music maestro S P Balasubrahmanyam has left a void in the world of music which probably no one can ever fill. Aged 74, he breathed his last in a Chennai hospital, where he was undergoing treatment. He had tested positive for COVID and was hospitalised in August and had tested negative on September 4. However, he continued to be on ventilator.

Here, we took a look at a few songs which we will miss SPB perform.

1) Omkara Nadhanu

A composition in the Sankarabharanam raga of Carnatic music by  KV Mahadevan, from the ward winning Telugu film Sankarabharanam, the song is a duet by SPB and S Janaki. It also won him the National film award for the best singer in 1979. In fact, this was SPB's first national award

2) Tere Mere Beech Main

A duet with Lata Mangeshkar, this legendary love song is from the 1981 film Ek duje ke liye. It won SPB the National film award for the best playback singer

3) Kadhal Rojave

The song that merges pathos, romance and longing from A R Rahman's debut album Roja, is still widely listened to. SPB sang this along with Sujatha Mohan.

4) Anjali Anjali Pushpanjali

Another composition by AR Rahman, this song from the Tamil film Duet was a duet with KS Chithra.

5) Ilaya Nila Pozhigirathe

A song that most people associate SPB with was composed by Ilayaraja for the movie Payanangal Mudivathillai. All songs in this film were sung by him

6) Satham Illatha

Composed by Bharadwaj for the film Amarkalam, the song is a major turning point in this film

7) Thanga Thamarai

Another National award-winning song, this was composed by A R Rahman for the movie Minsara Kanavu. SPB also played the role of Arvind Swamy's father here

8) Kannal Pesum Penne

Composed by Vidyasagar for Mozhi, the song is a modification of the Malayalam song Walking in the moonlight from the film Sathyam Shivam Sundaram

9) Mannil Indha Kaadhal

SPB apparently sang an entire verse in one breath here. The song was composed by Ilayaraja for Keladi Kanmani, where SPB played the lead role

10) Oruvan oruvan muthalali

A popular hit from Muthu, this was composed by A R Rahman for Rajnikanth starrer Muthu
