In a video posted on US Consulate General Chennai's YouTube, US Consul General Judith Ravin stated, “We are offering as many visa appointments as possible for students visa applicants.” This comes amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw a steep fall in the number of Indians applying to US universities for higher studies. India remains the second-largest market for US universities, after China, for the influx of foreign students.

According to the Open Doors report, published by the US Embassy, a whopping 193,124 Indian students applied to US universities in the 2019-20 academic year. But while the number may seem huge, there has been a 4.4% decline. And this is before the pandemic. With Indian students contributing billions of dollars to the US economy, the country still remains the top choice for Indians seeking to study abroad, the report states.

In order to boost the number of students applying to US Consulate General Chennai is celebrating International Education Week with the theme “Engaged, Resilient, Global.” Events for IEW from November 17 to 23, 2020. It is a joint initiative of the US Department of State and the US Department of Education to promote programs that prepare students for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.
