Pressurised for not being able to pay rent, Tripura youth commits suicide in Chennai

A Tripura youth had committed suicide yesterday in Chennai allegedly after being pressurised by his landlord for paying house rent during the ongoing lockdown due to COVID pandemic situation.

According to report, 32 yrs old Mithun Bhowmik is a resident of Barpathari area South Tripura, has been working as a wage earner in a private company in Chennai. He lost the job due to lockdown and stuck up in Chennai at empty-handed.

Mithun was unable to pay house rent for past two months and for past few weeks he was unable to manage a square meal. The victim family alleged that early this week his landlord evicted him from the house but did not allow him to move with any of his household goods and other articles.

Allegedly, the landlord told him to take his belongings after paying the rent. Then he moved to three of his friends from the same village, staying together. Meantime, he got a distress call from his family here seeking money, as he was the main earner of the family and every month Mithun used to send Rs 5000 to the family.

But for the past two months, it was stopped that put the family here in trouble. Moreover, there was also a crisis in the friends' place, which is believed to compel him to commit suicide. Quoting the statement of one his friend at Chennai, Mithun's family said, "Yesterday, morning when two of his friends went around for shopping and another got engaged in household work. Mithun took the advantage of loneliness in a room and hanged. After sometimes, friends returned and found him hanging. Police recovered the body and kept in moorage there waiting for the consent of the family to dispose the body."

The police officials visited the family and recorded the statement of the family and matter would be taken up with their Tamil Nadu counterpart for a due investigation into the allegation as well as to ascertain the reason for committing suicide, said South Tripura district police officials.

Another tribal youth from Gandacherra of Dhalai district identified as Gobinda Tripura died in a hospital at Guwahati yesterday reportedly after brief ailment of jaundice like a disease. However, the body was kept for ascertaining any link of Covid-19. He was admitted to Mahendra Mohan Choudhury in Guwahati last week with the complaint of liver-related problem, family sources said here.

Meanwhile, a leader of BJP youth wing identified as Samrat Paul (25), a resident of Chittaranjan area of the city was found hanging at his residence.
