The National Institutional Ranking Framework came out with its fifth rank list today and Tamil Nadu managed to get 18 Universities in the top 100 Universities. That means that Tamil Nadu had one University in every five top Universities across the country. Which is a fantastic feat but not after you look at the 2019 Rankings where they had managed to get 23 Universities to figure in the list.

The Universities that missed out a ranking in the first 100 this year are supposed to be some of the best in the state - Tamil Nadu Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and Chennai’s Meenakshi Academy of Higher Education and Research that came in last place last year.

While Anna University topped the list at seventh last year, followed by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in the eight place. This year, the latter is giving Anna University a run for its money by not only surpassing it but also landing up in the fourth rank this year. The next three Universities were placed in the same order but at different ranks - Bharathiar came in at 13, VIT at 16 and University of Madras at 22. Alagappa University that took the 28th rank last year took a plunge to the 36th position and three other TN Universities were placed above it -  Shanmugha Arts Science Technology & Research Academy (40 to 25), Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education And Research (33 to 28) , SRM Institute of Science and Technology (32 to 35).

Two new Universities from Tamil Nadu to make an entrance this year are Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Higher Education at 72 and  Chettinad Academy of Research and Education at 98. Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology and Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences both climbed up a few ranks  this year in comparison to last year - 41 to 39 and 43 to 42.  Bharathidasan University went up from 60 to 53,

Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research dropped from 36 to 59, Madurai Kamaraj University plunged from 45- 60, Periyar University shockingly went from 68 - 83 and The Gandhigram Rural Institute took a steep slip from 75 - 91.
