After student outcry against IIT Kharagpur demanding that its students pay for facilities that they may not avail owing to the lockdown, the institute has now informed that it will waive the mess fees for the next semester. It added that the students will have to fall back on private messes on a payment basis when they come back to campus for the next semester. The students had previously told us that they were asked to pay for electricity, water, mess, use of the gymkhana and the Technology Film Society.

The institute now in a statement says that "the charges for Hall Establishment, TSG, overhead, Electricity, Water will be reviewed at the end of the Semester and suitably adjusted for next semester". The institute also said that it is planning for a hybrid model in the next semester and is planning to bring students in batches to campus. "The classes will start through online mode for all. However, there are a number of students who have informed that they have poor or no internet connectivity at their place of residence and they will like to come back to campus for classes. We will have to call such students to campus and they will do classes in online mode from their rooms in halls," reads the statement. The institute has also waived additional fees, which is normally charged every year.

The student senate, on the other hand, has suggested that the institute waive the mess fee only for those students who won't be returning to campus. It has also asked the institute to do away with the internet, TFS and electricity charges for those students. The institute, however, said that these charges are to be paid to pay the salary of the staff.  Taking this into consideration, the students have now asked for a fee reduction. The students have also asked the institute to extend the deadline for the payment of fees.
