Madurai engineering colleges await word from Edu Dept, Directorate of Tech Edu on college reopening 

As per SOP each student has one room to maintain social distancing, other preventive measures will be followed including wearing masks, frequent hand washing

Engineering colleges in the district have been waiting to receive communication from Higher Education Department and Directorate of Technical Education regarding reopening of colleges. As per Tamil Nadu Government's order, final year PG classes for all colleges/universities including Arts, Science, Technical institutions are permitted to function from December 2. Similarly, final year of Under Graduate classes will be permitted to function from December 7.

In this regard, Express spoke to Madurai Kamaraj University Vice Chancellor, students and few principals of the colleges in the district. Speaking to Express, MKU Vice Chancellor M Krishnan said that as per our request Tamil Nadu Government has relocated the Covid treating centres functioning in the varsity campus. Officials from Health Department removed all their things including beds, bed sheets which have been used by the patients.

Now, all the hostel rooms have been disinfected, cleaned and ready to accommodate the students, he said."As per SOP each student has one room to maintain social distancing, other preventive measures will be followed including wearing masks, frequent hand washing. Students will be only allowed to get food from the common mess. But, they have to eat it at their hostel rooms in order to avoid group gathering. Only science students have been asked to attend the classes with parents permission", he added.

Amirtha who is native of Madurai studying at Coimbatore Institute of Technology said that in Coimbatore district, more number of students from other districts are studying. All the students are rush to their colleges on the same day. Hence, there is wide possibility of virus spreading, conjusted in buses and other mode of transport. My friends and myself decided to go to college hostels after one week from the date of reopening, she said. Speaking to Express, On request of anonymity, Principal from an Engineering College Principal said that college administration has disinfected all the rooms as per SOP and rooms are ready to accommodate the students. However, based on the Communication received from the Anna University and Directorate of Technical Education colleges will be reopened, he said.
