The much-awaited Karnataka Secondary Level School Certificate (SSLC) was finally announced on August 10 at 3 pm. Despite opposition from parents and activists, the KSEEB had gone forward to conduct the SSLC exams in June and July, during the pandemic. Around 8.48 lakh students had applied for the SSLC exams out of which only 8,11,050 appeared and 5,82,316 students cleared the exam. The pass percentage is 71.80 which is marginally lower than the 73.70 per cent that was seen in 2019.
Unlike the previous years, this year's SSLC result has been a bit different. This year, Chikkaballapur secured the first place for highest pass percentage of students. It was followed by Bengaluru Rural, Madhugiri, Mandya, Chitradurga, Kolar, Udupi and a few other districts. Udupi and Mangaluru districts that always secured the top two ranks came down to 7th and 12th respectively. But the least pass percentage like every year was Yadgir in Kalaburgi district.
Girls outshine boys
Like every year, girls outshone boys in the SSLC exams. This year, the pass percentage of boys was 66.41 which is less when compared to last year's 68.46 per cent. The pass percentage of girls was 77.74 and in 2019 it was 79.59. Around six students scored 625, 11 students scored 624 and 43 students scored 623. Sannidhi Mahabaleshwar from Sirsi, Chirayu K S and Nikhilesh N Marali from Bengaluru are the students who scored highest marks in English medium. Abhishek M from Davanagere, Sahana Shankar Kamagoudar from Belagavi and Shruti Basagouda Patil from Belagavi are the toppers from Kannada medium.
Supplementary exams for a second chance
More than three lakh students who have failed in the SSLC exams can also write supplementary exams that will be conducted in the month of September. However, the KSEEB has announced that students who were unable to attempt the exams for various health issues including Corona or they might have not been able to attend for being in the containment zones will be treated as their first attempt and there is no fee charged for them. However, students who have failed exams have to pay Rs 320 for one subject, 386 for two subjects and Rs 520 for three or more subjects.
