Announcing his debut National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings, HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said that India was the guru of the world and it now has the potential to reclaim that position. He also stressed on the fact that our moral education will give us that edge. The minister announced the NIRF Rankings through video conference in the presence of the Minister of State, Sanjay Dhotre and the UGC and AICTE Chairman along with other officials.

Pokhriyal has always been vocal about the importance of India's heritage and stressed that India was way ahead of the rest of the world and probably had made inventions and discoveries centuries before the west did. Carrying forward that thought he said, "India was the guru of the world and it is time to reclaim that position. We have to strengthen our science, culture and technical education. Apart from the overall ranking, we are also releasing the top institutes in specific fields. Our education institutes are moving fast in the international rankings."

He also added that young India is already on its way to a promising future. "We are dedicated to education and the students who are enrolling in our institutes, we need to make them into future leaders who will take India to new heights. We should have a feeling of healthy competition which can take our mission forward. If we have that spirit, then no one can stop us from reaching heights," he added. "India has the potential. Our moral education is our strength. During the COVID-19 crisis, Indian students were creating solutions for global problems through innovations. India has potential, that is why our 'Study in India' app is also working to bring international students to India," said the Minister.

This is the first NIRF ranking that was announced under the leadership of HRD Minister Pokhriyal. The number of Indian institutes which registered for the NIRF ranking this year has increased from 20 per cent as compared to last year. This year for the first time dental institutes will also be ranked. Earlier, Institutes were ranked in multiple categories including – best overall institute, best university, top engineering institute, top college, best management institute, top pharmacy college, best law school, best architecture college, and top medical college. The education institutes and universities all over India are ranked across several parameters including teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcome outreach and inclusivity, and perception.
