A total of 147 candidates including former vice-chancellors have applied for the Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor post. The last date for applying for the Vice-Chancellor post at Bharathiar University ended at 5 pm on Monday. The list of candidates who have applied for the VC posts was published on the Bharathiar University website on Wednesday. A total of 147 academicians have applied for the post, which included three former VCs S Manian (Annamalai University), G Valli (Mother Teresa Women's University), K Murugan (Thiruvalluvar University).

Apart from this, candidates from various parts of the State, outside Tamil Nadu have also applied for the Bharathiar University VC post. The VC search committee is likely to meet in the coming days to scrutiny these applications. The committee is expected to complete the process and submit a panel of three names for the post to the Governor in a month's time, sources added. On July 31, the Higher Education department reconstituted the search committee consisting of M Sheela Priya, retired additional chief secretary, C Subramaniam, former VC Tamil University, SP Thyagarajan, former VC University of Madras. Earlier government has nominated K Ganesan as convenor of the committee and after he expressed his inability to be part of the committee, the government reconstituted the committee replacing him with Sheela Priya.

In 2017, the Higher Education department fixed educational qualification for the post of Vice-Chancellor. According to a government order, VC aspirant should possess PhD in any discipline and have not less than 25 years of experience in teaching and research in university or post-graduate college or publicly funded research institutions or not less than ten years of experience as a professor in a university system. He/she should also have not less than six years of administrative experience in positions like dean, head of the department, must have published no less than five research papers in University Grants Commission listed journals after acquiring PhD or authored not less than two books (non-edited books) and must have presented not less than two papers in international level academic or research events and possess experience of having conducted not less than one such academic or research event.
