Why is #DhoniRetires trending on Twitter and who started it?

Cricket fans across India went into a panic mode on Tuesday as #DhoniRetires was in the list of top trends on Twitter. Even without any confirmation from the authorities the mourning fans kept Twitter abuzz with discussions on Dhoni's achievements and records as a batsman and wicketkeeper. Some die-hard fans even asking him to carry on playing for the country. Some fans even started tweeting with #NeverRetireDhoni and #ThankYouDhoni. 

Twitter used @sacredutd was the first to put out a post with the hashtag today. But the same hashtag has been in use since 2015 and was trending when India lost to New Zealand in the World Cup.

Ever since Dhoni took a break from cricket after India's exit from the 2019 World Cup in England, rumours about the 38-year-old's retirement have been doing the rounds. He has since trained with his regiment in the Territorial Indian Army, made a handful of public appearances and also recently met with Virat Kohli's team after India's victory over South Africa in the Ranchi Test.
