The members of the Delhi University Students Union had met the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday, requesting the government to fund a hostel for the university students who hail from Uttar Pradesh. The students who requested financial assistance of Rs 48,000 tell us that the request was well received and the CM assured the construction of a 1000 berth hostel near Delhi.
Shakti Singh, President, DUSU, who met Adityanath said that only 1 to 2 per cent of DU students have access to the university hostels. "Demand for hostels have always been one of the core agenda of ABVP. Acceptance and recognition of this proposal by the UP Government has brought us hope. This is a victory in itself. We expect this proposal to take shape at the earliest once necessary formalities have been met," he says.
He added that a request about the same which was sent to the AAP led Delhi Government never yielded a reply. "In 2014, the university received around Rs 4,000 Crore for hostel construction. But this fund wasn't utilised by the administration. We had then approached the Delhi Government demanding a new hostel, but we did not get a response. Hence, we decided to talk to the UP CM," he says. He said that the North East Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari has also promised to release funds to build a 3,000 berth hostel for the DU students.
