The IIM Bangalore faculty and students condemned the fact that a majority of the Lok Sabha MPs voted in favour of the Citizenship Amendment Bill. In the letter, the academics and students appealed to the MPs to reject the bill because it is against the fundamental founding principle of India.

"This is the death of democracy," says a research scholar in the institute who had signed the letter. "Just for the sake of power and to dominate, our leaders are violating the constitutional values that so many of them gave us through years of sacrifice. We're violating every section of the constitution gradually," he says, adding that the bill is illogical and unconstitutional.

The letter with 69 signatures, was sent to the MPs on December 8. "We initially thought that it'll be presented in the next week. But when we got to know that it will be presented today, we were quick to send the letter," says the researcher. "We hope that more people send similar letters to the government," he adds.

We spoke to one more IIM student who sent the letter who had something similar to say. "The govt seemed to be so enthusiastic in getting the bill passed. This letter was our way of raising our voice," he says. "It's time we speak up."
