A group of Supreme Court lawyers penned a letter to the Chief Justice of India appealing to him to take suo motu cognizance of the missing UP law students who alleged that a BJP leader had sexually harassed her. The law student had uploaded a Facebook video of herself accusing Swami Chinmayanand of sexually abusing her and ruining the lives of several other women, ever since she has gone missing.
The lawyers in their letter said that they feared another 'Unnao' would take place. "We as a society cannot allow another Unnao case to happen. This Hon’ble Court has been interfering in letter petitions when it comes to the protection of human rights,” the letter read. The police have already booked the former Union minister and three-time MP for allegedly kidnapping the law student.
The parents of the girl have filed a complaint against the BJP leader for threatening the family and allegedly kidnapping their daughter, "We have some vital clues through electronic surveillance and are confident of tracing her very soon," the Director-General of Police (DGP) OP Singh told Hindustan Times.
The National Commission for Women has also issued a notice to the police in Uttar Pradesh to take immediate steps and investigate the matter.
