MTech student found hanging in IIT-Kharagpur hostel
This is the first death in the premier institute nearly after a year. Four students of the institute had committed suicide last year
A 24-year-old MTech final year electrical engineering student was found hanging in his room at Madan Mohan Malviya Hall of Residence in IIT Kharagpur in West Bengal on Wednesday night.
The victim has been identified as Gangireddy Hanimi Reddy, a resident of Andhra Pradesh. Nobody saw him throughout Wednesday and the matter was reported with the administration.
The victim's roommate found the room locked from inside upon his return on Wednesday evening. When nobody responded to his knocks on the door, the victim's roommate alerted the police who broke open the door and found Hanimi found hanging from the ceiling fan of the room.
"We have not found any suicide note. We are trying to open his laptop and mobile phone to find any leads in the case. Preliminary investigation suggests that it is a suicide case but the cause if death can only be confirmed after an autopsy," Paschim Medinipur district president Alok Rajoria said.
"The incident is unfortunate. We are also trying to find out the cause of the incident," IIT Kharagpur deputy director S K Bhattacharya said.

Lokesh Meena from Rajasthan had committed suicide on railway tracks in January last year while Sana Sreeraj from Andhra Pradesh was found dead on railway tracks in March. Kerala's Nidhin N killed himself in his hostel room with a note 'Let me sleep' in April while Nikhil Bhatia jumped off the roof of his hostel in October last year.
