Villupuram, one of the backward districts in Tamil Nadu, houses many government schools. However, in this year's public exam, students from the district put up a poor show both in the higher secondary exams and the SSLC. Though a few private school students achieved state-level marks, their government school counterparts were lagging behind. Officials blamed it on shortage of teachers and officials in government schools.
