The Student's Federation of India (SFI) has created a history of sorts by electing the first transgender student to its district committee in Thrissur on Wednesday.

A popular face in the social media for highlighting the plight of transgender people, Nandhana, hailing from Pullur near Irinjalakkuda, is happy to share the additional responsibility. She strives to go for higher studies and bring better social status for other transgender community members. Being a transgender, Nandhana faced many taboos during her childhood days, yet, with the support of family and friends, she remains determined to achieve her goals.

Nandhana completed her Plus 2 from Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial High School (LBSMHS), Avittathur, in 2015 and had applied for graduation twice.

"I applied to many colleges in the district, but did not receive any communication about my admission, she said. She has applied again and hopes to get the admission to BA Sociology with the help of the student organisation. I want to get a good education and work towards bringing up others in my community to a better social status," Nandhana said.

Sangeeth CS, SFI district secretary, said that the organisation would take up her issue and has initiated a process to get her admission for a course of her choice. While transgender students have been facing difficulties in pursuing their rights, and the inclusion of Nandhana in the district committee, would help in addressing such issues in a more constructive manner.
