Knife in hand, sacked guest lecturer returns to Madurai Kamaraj University and stabs female HOD in office

A former guest lecturer of Madurai Kamaraj University walked into the room of the head of a department on Tuesday morning and stabbed her allegedly over the loss of  his job. Dr S Jenefa, Associate Professor and Head Chairperson, incharge, Department of Journalism and Science Communication, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Madurai, while the attacker, Jothi Murugan has been detained by the police.

Police sources said Jothi Murugan (32), who worked as a guest lecturer in the same department, entered her room at around 10 am with a knife which he used to stab her immediately after entering the room. 

When Murugan exited and attempted to flee the spot, a group of students noticed him and found his behaviour suspicious. Surrounded by students, he attempted to stab himself but was soon overpowered by students before.

Soon, students and others found Jenefa in a pool of blood and rushed her to the nearby government hospital from where she was rushed to a private hospital in Madurai.

A former student said Murugan was dismissed from the department and was not given a job in the same department or college. The student also said that Murugan, when nabbed, said his wife had deserted him after he lost his job. Nagamalaipudukottai police are investigating the case.
