'Bright' student at IIIT Bengaluru dies under mysterious circumstances; police suspect suicide

Fourth-year student Goluguri Sai Sharat dies after falling off the college building on Friday morning. College maintains that it could not be a suicide because he had no academic pressure.

College director offers full cooperation to police for the investigation

India comprises of 17 per cent of the total suicide deaths, globally. Students become a vulnerable section with one student committing suicide every hour, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).  

In another suspected case of suicide, a final year MTech student died under mysterious circumstances at IIITB on Friday, leaving students and faculty shell shocked. Even as police suspect suicide, the college authorities believe that there could be no reason for him to take the extreme step. 

Goluguri Sai Sharat was a 7th-semester student, who pursued was pursuing MTech Course. The Computer Science student was found dead after having fallen from the hostel premises early in the morning on Friday here in Bengaluru. With no death note left behind, reasons for his death still remain a mystery.


The police are investigating the case. The Institute is extending all cooperation to investigating officers. The Institute will continue to provide all possible support to the bereaved family

According to the registrar of IIITB, Sridhar, the student was academically very sound and performed well in class. "There could be no known academic pressure on anyone like him. His classes also had just started and no exams were scheduled around the next couple of weeks," he added. 

He stayed at the hostel in IIITB and his father is an income tax office. Since the hostel only has single accommodations, none of his friends knew about his mental status, according to the Institute. 

In an official note, director of the Institute, Dr S Sadagopan said, "It is with great shock and sorrow we announce the sad demise in the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT Bangalore) Campus of Goluguri Sai Sarat a fourth-year Integrated M.Tech student of our Institute. The police are investigating the case. The Institute is extending all cooperation to investigating officers. The Institute will continue to provide all possible support to the bereaved family."
