Bihar college that asks employees if they are virgins says, 'If AIIMS can do it, why can't we?'

Marital status, yes. Virginity status? It's probably the last thing one would expect on an employee admission form, but not if you want a job at IGIMS in Bihar
The form has been used for applicants since 1983

Are you married/unmarried/virgin?

How many wives do you live with?

Are you living with someone who has more than one wife?

Do these questions make you cringe? Hold on, as it gets even more eccentric — these are the questions asked in an employee admission form of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Bihar, an autonomous college supported by the government.

Unable to make sense of this downright peculiarity, we ask the authorities the reason behind such questions. "What is wrong with asking someone about their marital status, it is basically to ensure that the employee's property reaches the right hands after their expiration. You wouldn't want some random person who claims to be the wife or husband of the employee to misuse the information," said Dr K H Raghwendra, the Sub Dean, IGIMS.

But why virgin? Raghavendra started off by claiming that the word "virgin" doesn't just mean something sexual, but then went on to say that they are only doing so because AIIMS sets the format. "IGIMS is an autonomous institute under the state of Bihar, we follow the format set by AIIMS which is a Central government institute. All medical institutes follow the format set by AIIMS, so they will be the right people to explain why this is being asked to the employees." incidentally, we were unable to find any forms from AIIMS that suggested that this was true, but that is another issue altogether.

When asked if any employee had had an issue, Raghavendra said that as far he knows, there wasn't. However, he said that he would check with his personnel department and release an official statement on the issue.

Clearly, Twitterati doesn't agree with the question because the post has attracted a lot of flak.
