Why this Hyderabad-based start-up's inks will fill your life with gloss and colour

Beyond Inks was started just last year and today, they are already a well-to-do business. They manufacture inks two months in advance while packaging it is a continuous process. This is their story

How would you introduce a lesser-known medium to paint in the market? If you have such plans, we suggest you take a leaf out of the book of Hyderabad-based Beyond Inks, a brand that has mastered the art of selling alcohol inks. Started just a year ago by Gayathri Gupta Shatavelli (30) and Harish Sale (28), today, they receive orders from across the country. And this is how they do it! "Actually, we launched it as a small idea because we noticed how alcohol inks were rarely available in the Indian market, and if they are available, the prices are very high. But when people started appreciating what we were doing, it grew into a business," says Gayathri.

But first, why should we be charmed by alcohol inks? Gayathri introduces us to them by stating that they are dye-based inks which are more vibrant than water colours or acrylics. They are quick to dry, under 30 seconds flat, and work the best with non-porous materials, even glass and ceramics! This convinced the duo that the inks would find a market here and hence, in consultation with a specialist, they manufacture their own brand of alcohol inks, package and sell it.

Now coming to the sales, Gayathri and Harish stepped into the ring themselves by conducting workshops with alcohol inks in March last year. Then, they introduced other artists to the medium and encouraged them to conduct workshops. It was a simple chain reaction. But what now, when due to COVID all workshops have gone digital? "Because the challenge now is access to the exact materials needed for workshops, we provide workshops kits which, after registrations, are shipped to the participants directly," explains the youngster and adds that there are four to five workshops per week being conducted across the country that they are helping with. And since online workshops are on an upswing, these kits are doing particularly well, we hear.

Apart from alcohol inks in 18 colours, and five in metallic, Beyond Inks offers 10 petri inks, the latest addition to their catalogue. "This is for people who work with resin. Apart from being wonderfully unconventional and contemporary, it helps suspend colour in resin," says Gayathri. They also offer Yupo paper — a synthetic paper manufactured by a Japanese company that is non-porous, water-resistant and hence, the perfect companion to alcohol inks. Then there is black synthetic paper, coasters to paint on and an array of other products.

The duo is always thinking of exploring more mediums and coming up with other lines of products that are new and upbeat. "The point is to keep art simple," she highlights. May they keep bringing more colours into our lives, always!

They also offer:
- White alcohol ink and resin ink sinker
- Surfaces, coasters and clocks
- Resin kits and moulds
