In a shocking incident at Indian Institute of Science,  KV Pavan Kumar,  a final year PhD student committed suicide in the hostel.  Originally a native of Andhra Pradesh, Pavan was pursuing his PhD in the department of High Energy Physics.  He was found dead by a student who opened his room after a foul smell emanated from it, leading him to suspect that something was wrong. "None of us could believe it because he was a bright student. He was supposed to submit his thesis and graduate from IISc on July 31. We have not even heard of him complain of any harassment ever, ” added the student.

Naveen S,  Inspector,  Sadashivnagar Police Station,  said, "The body has been taken to MS Ramaiah hospital for post mortem and the reports are yet to come.  We have also recovered a suicide note from his room in which it was written that no one is responsible for his suicide. We checked with his parents also who stated that he had called them two days ago and he had sounded normal on the phone."

It can be recalled that Ameya Prataap Chutke, an MTech student from IISc committed suicide in the month of May 2019. He was treated for depression in the college health care centre.  He had hanged himself with a plastic rope.  From then, IISc had introduced an app called 'Your Dost' in the campus to help students cope with anxiety and depression.  One could easily register on this app and reach out to mentors or counsellors depending on their concerns.  Even psychiatrists would be available to solve problems related to mental health.  There were many surveys conducted on campus to keep a check on mental health problems in order to devise possible solutions for them.
