Chennai college to celebrate India's Balkrishna Doshi, winner of world's top Architecture award

A seminar is being conducted by MIDAS celebrating and discussing the achievements of the renowned architect and his contributions to architecture

MARG Institute of Design and Architecture Swarnabhoomi (MIDAS), a college for Architectural studies in Chennai is set to organize a seminar celebrating the contribution of Balkrishna Doshi to the evolution of architecture. The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 12 from 3 pm to 7 pm at Music Academy.

Architect Balkrishna Vithaladas Doshi, known for his pioneering work in low-cost housing, has won this year's prestigious Pritzker Prize. Doshi, 90, is the first Indian to win the award, which is regarded as the highest honour in the field.

Doshi began studying architecture in 1947, at Mumbai’s Sir JJ School of Architecture and has contributed to architecture for over six decades.

“B.V. Doshi being the first Indian to receive the prestigious Pritzker Prize is a matter of great joy and honour for the Architecture fraternity in India,” says Shashank Chakradeo, Principal of MIDAS.

Chakradeo says, “Doshi’s work was more than just about structure, it incorporated various factors like the environment, culture and comfort. His buildings were made with a strong connection to the human spirit.”

The seminar will consist of a discussion held in honour of Balkrishna Doshi’s contribution to Indian Architecture and this panel consists of speakers who are renowned architects or architecture professors from across India. Chakradeo also adds, “Awareness about architecture is important and a necessity in India, which is why we need to have more discussions like these.”

The speakers are M. Thirumeni, Professor and Dean of Architecture at SRM institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, Zoyab Kadi, Professor and Dean of Architecture at AMS Academy of Architecture, Anna University, Chennai and Kasthurba, Associate Professor, Department of Architecture, National Institute of Technology Calicut, Calicut.

The event will also have session called ‘Career in Architecture’ addressing topics like the future of architecture in India, the role of an architect and the process of becoming a successful architect.
