Most youngsters are all about keeping up with the latest trends, but how about wearing art? Hyderabad-based Sahaja Spandana has been painting motifs like animals and birds on T-shirts for friends and family for the past ten years and lucky for us, she has decided to customise them for the rest of us too, thanks to Wearable Art. "When I saw how happy the T-shirts made my friends, some of whom wouldn't even wear them because they wanted to preserve them, I was convinced that I wanted to spread happiness through my art," said the 24-year-old.

But ‘regular’ isn’t her thing. Sahaja wants to paint something unusual — something that won’t be churned out by a machine by the dozen. Imagine the beautiful blue Hyacinth Macaw, a parrot found in parts of South America, or the unique Paradise Flycatcher, a bird found in abundance in Asia and Africa, on your T-shirt. Such exotic birds are what the Nellore-born artist loves to paint. And "these motifs are so much in demand now," she says.
But what is surprising to note is that Sahaja, who was home-schooled, is self-taught when it comes to painting too. She has attended workshops, of course, and has had the chance to interact with artists like Adam Khan (the famous artist residing in Kodaikanal) and others, but, "I have picked up more through observation than anything else," she tells us. Technique-wise too, she has used the One Stroke Technique, which requires one to load two colours of paint onto the brush, and is also planning to use the Japanese technique of Sumi-e soon. She also plans to interpret the works of great artists like Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and more. My, my, what talent!
