The entrepreneurial ecosystem has witnessed a paradigm shift in the last couple of years with digital transformation. A mobile-first world has pushed several large business houses towards adopting a ‘user first’ approach rather than the age-old ‘product first’ mindset. This fundamental change in the thought process and leadership roles has paved an era for digital designers.

Technological advancement is happening at a very high pace, bringing in concepts such as blockchain, artificial intelligence and robotics into everyday living. But, only designers have the power to make this technology usable and enjoyable. No idea can ever succeed until and unless it is accepted and adopted by the audience for which it is meant — and this is exactly what an experienced designer specialises in.
Designers basically drive innovation and advancement in the company, keeping consumers at the centre. They ensure that the offering is a perfect combination of advanced technology that drives on the wheels of empathy. The major aspects that designers consider are usability, feasibility (technology and market landscape) and seamless experience (functional and visual).

With the internet and a hyper-connected, social-media-fuelled society, brands are being instantly judged, and that experience is instantly shared with millions. Recently, all the brands that have been an enormous success have embedded design as a part of their strategy and have raised design standards considerably — Paytm, Uber or Swiggy are great examples to drive home this point. What sets them apart are the three aspects that every designer looks into — usability, feasibility and experience. This is the very reason that entrepreneurs have started appreciating design and its importance in strategising, positioning and driving user’s engagement and loyalty.

Choosing experience design as a career is going to be a very smart move for every aspiring creative soul. But, the challenge is that every designer needs to be extremely versatile and should not limit themselves to one singular stream. If you really want to be sought after you need to acquaint yourself with the skills of a researcher, experience designer (UX), visual designer (UI) and also have a basic knowledge of coding. The more you learn, the better you are. Products are often gauged not just on the technical punch they pack, but also on how much sense they make and how easy they are to use/consume. This is vital at the design stage.

Apart from just focusing on the technical skills every designer needs to acquaint themselves with for all the platforms out there, they also need to be aware that the current marketing landscape is about quick test, fail and retrying. So, every designer needs to be fast and should be extremely judicious as to where they spend their time and energy.

A primary aspect of the user interface and user experience field that will continue to make it relevant is the fact that such services will only continue to grow in importance as technology becomes more complicated and advanced. Lastly, it is important to focus on soft skills because if you cannot communicate your ideas, they will always remain in your head.
